Learn to find a real opportunity

How to find, analyse and validate a market opportunity from public evidence

01What is a market opportunity? Most definitions of a market opportunity are circular — "a chance to meet a market need". This one is testable: demand you can count, pain you can read, a price someone will pay, and a gap the incumbents have left open.02How to find market opportunitiesYou do not find market opportunities by brainstorming. You find them by reading what people write when they are stuck, and by being disciplined about which of those complaints is a market and which is one person having a bad day.03Market opportunity analysisOpportunity analysis fails in a predictable way: a large number for the market size, a paragraph of adjectives for everything else, and no way for a reader to disagree with any of it. This framework produces the opposite — seven numbers, each traceable to something you can point at.04Startup ideas from real demandEvery list of startup ideas has the same defect: the ideas are detached from the person who has the problem. An idea you read is someone else's guess. An idea you extract from a complaint comes with a name, a date, a link and a first customer.05How to validate a startup ideaThe reason most validation produces false positives is that it asks about the future. "Would you use this?" is a question about a hypothetical, and people are generous about hypotheticals. Everything below asks about the past instead, where the answers are already fixed.06Market gap analysisA market gap is a demand the existing products do not serve. The analysis is not hard; the discipline is. Most reported gaps dissolve on contact with a competitor's pricing page, and the ones that survive are worth more than a quarter of brainstorming.
