Stripe Dashboard: POS & payments: Charged handling fees when refunding money to customers
Merchants incur financial losses and high fees when processing customer refunds or handling payment disputes, often while still being charged transaction fees for payments they never ultimately received. Furthermore, existing point-of-sale systems suffer from technical limitations such as poor evidence-upload interfaces for disputes, lack of cash refund buttons, and restrictions that only allow full refunds.
8 different people have complained about this since 28 May 2014, most recently on 06 Aug 2026.
No new posts for 90 days. This may have been fixed, or people stopped writing about it — the evidence below is from before 06 Aug 2026.
- “They even charge you a fee to submit evidence for a dispute ontop of guaranteeing a customer will get a refund by providing lack of support and charging another transaction fee ontop of the originally charged one.”
- “In the end we had to refund the client, and Stripe still charged us a handling fee for a payment we did not receive.”
- “I'm moving back to square because with them you don't get charged for accepting checks and you can issue a full cash, check, or credit card refund.”

…tomers have the good or service you provide and want a refund anyway. They even charge you a fee to submit evidence for a dispute ontop of guaranteeing a customer will get a refund by providing lack of support and charging another transaction fee ontop of the originally charged one. Beware of this payment system there…
Missing feature…e were luck. I was never come across such a slow payment processor. In the end we had to refund the client, and Stripe still charged us a handling fee for a payment we did not receive. With every other company such as Paypal there are no fees for refunds. Questions about this idea
- Is POS & payments: Charged handling fees when refunding money to customers a startup idea?
- Not directly. These are complaints about a product or service people already use, and the fix belongs first to that provider. The page shows what is frustrating users and how badly — not an open market to start a company in.
- How many people have this problem?
- 8 different people described it independently, in 8 mentions, the earliest from 28 May 2014 and the most recent from 06 Aug 2026. The quotes, with dates and links to the originals, are in the Evidence section.
- Is this problem getting worse?
- Status: quiet — no new posts in the last 60 days. 0 people raised it in the last 30 days and 0 in the 30 days before; the status compares its share of everything collected from the same source, so collecting more or less cannot create a trend.

Losing hefty transaction fees on Stripe just for returning money to a client hits merchants right in the wallet. We read through 8 people detailing how these charges pile up when sales get reversed. At what exact point in the dashboard does the system actually apply those fees for you?
