Universe Website Builder: Basic features locked behind paywalls

Users are frustrated by recent updates that restrict core functionality behind a paywall, rendering the free version insufficient for practical use. This aggressive monetization strategy limits access to essential features, leading long-time supporters to view the service as overpriced and unusable without a subscription.

7 different people have complained about this since 15 Nov 2019, most recently on 10 Jan 2026.

No new posts for 302 days. This may have been fixed, or people stopped writing about it — the evidence below is from before 10 Jan 2026.

Universe Website Builder — The recent update makes me hate this service They basically merged almost every ability that was free into their very expensive paid plans. Things that should be available in the free version are now only available with an expensive subscription. They sent out an email saying “oh sorry, but…

…ally make a website and this was enough for me to buy a subscription. Oh how the times have changed in the digital goods world now this app is completely useless unless you pay what you get with the free version is a “tour” of what can be and quite frankly it’s not enough to keep you wanting more. Sooner or later…

Universe Website Builder — Expensive paywall for the bare minimum… not worth it Don't bother with this app. They believe in expensive subscription tiers and giving you limited abilities and access. Look at other options. This app lost the plot

Questions about this idea

Is Basic features locked behind paywalls a startup idea?
Not directly. These are complaints about a product or service people already use, and the fix belongs first to that provider. The page shows what is frustrating users and how badly — not an open market to start a company in.
How many people have this problem?
7 different people described it independently, in 7 mentions, the earliest from 15 Nov 2019 and the most recent from 10 Jan 2026. The quotes, with dates and links to the originals, are in the Evidence section.
Is this problem getting worse?
Status: quiet — no new posts in the last 60 days. 0 people raised it in the last 30 days and 0 in the 30 days before; the status compares its share of everything collected from the same source, so collecting more or less cannot create a trend.
