I know Steam has great customer support for players, but the sheer incompetence and lack of basic support from Steam for us as an indie developer is insane, even after taking 6 figures in fees from our game revenue.\n\nOur game is Milky Way Idle, which is an online multiplayer game made by my wife and I. Starting June 2025, my game was hit by a massive, coordinated review bomb and harassment campaign from hundreds of chinese players ([https://imgur.com/a/B4UxYzy](https://imgur.com/a/B4UxYzy)). The worst of it lasted for 2-3 months, but we are still dealing with the lingering effects because new players see the reviews and actually believe the defamatory lies this mob left behind. It's been 9 months and we are still unable to get adequate assistance.\n\n**Context on why this started**\n\nI banned a player for repeatedly harassing me (the developer) over in-progress changes on our test server, changes that were publicly disclosed as work-in-progress. We have a zero tolerance policy for abuse towards any game staff. They initially direct messaged me with some rude remarks which I ignored. Later he went to global chat yelling insults towards me and got muted temporarily. He continued again later on, and we gave them a manual 10 day mute. He then proceed to changed his in-game name to an insult directed at me just to circumvent the mute. So he got banned.\n\nIt turns out this player was a whale (we don't differentiate or even consider player spending for penalties regarding rule breaking). This sparked a massive drama because a lot of chinese players come from a gaming culture where it's expected for businesses to treat \"whales\" like gods and just accept abusive behavior. In the US, it's common to immediately kick out any customer who is abusive towards the staff, and that's the exact policy we have.\n\nBecause many chinese players believed a ban for \"just some insults\" toward game staff is undeserved, people started review bombing and spamming insults in game in solidarity with the original toxic player.\n\nFor days, hundreds of players started copycatting the abuse. They went into the English-only global chat and spammed hundreds of messages per minute with protest messages, insults, slurs, and death threats. Our English mods gave mutes to stop the spam, but then the mob immediately started claiming we were racist and \"muting people just for speaking Chinese\".\n\nThe disruptive players actively weaponized nationalism, spreading these rumors on social media to manipulate people who don't even play the game into joining the mob.\n\nBecause we banned additional people using severe insults and slurs towards game staff, the mob got bigger and continued for months.\n\nWe aren't talking about negative feedback regarding the game. We are talking about hundreds of reviews filled with personal insults, severe defamation, slurs, Nazi comparisons, and literal death threats/wishes. Of course there are also hundreds that did not use direct insults but is obviously part of the mob to intentionally review bomb and manipulate the review score for something that is not relevant to the gameplay itself.\n\nWhat really was frustrating about this mob mentality is how people just see the \"racist dev\" spam and blindly believe it without using some critical thinking. We literally spent endless effort working with volunteers to translate tens of thousands of words of in game text into Chinese. Who in their right mind would believe we discriminate against Chinese players? It literally makes no sense. Furthermore, I work on this game with my wife the artist, who the community knows is Chinese (I'm not too far myself but culturally very much American), but the mob just weaponized false accusation of racism as an excuse to riot.\n\nWhile overall it's a minority of the Chinese playerbase (we had about 20k or so total, most people play from browser) that were disruptive, it still creates a very hostile environment and persists because of what new players may see in reviews.\n\n**Review manipulation?** There is also significant evidence that there is intentional review manipulation that's not from organic players. more than 50% of the negative reviews during the review bomb are from players who have logged less than 24 hours in the game. Our game is an idle game intended for very longterm play. The core playerbase generally have hundreds to thousands of hours in the game. We do understand that there are players who play mostly from the browser version of the game rather than from Steam, but from what we've seen, a huge number of these low interaction negative reviews have not even gotten to the point of logging into the game (only opened it to get the minimum review requirement)\n\n< 1 hour: 240 reviews (25.6%)\n\n1-6 hours: 132 reviews (14.1%)\n\n6-24 hours: 127 reviews (13.5%)\n\n24-100 hours: 161 reviews (17.1%)\n\n100+ hours: 279 reviews (29.7%)\n\n**Steam's complete lack of support**\n\nWe have tried to reach out to Steam with numerous support tickets and all we get are requests to flag abusive reviews individually, often waiting 2 weeks for a single response. When we finally give them a compilation, while they do ban some of the reviews, many are not removed ([https://imgur.com/a/ogbaTo5](https://imgur.com/a/ogbaTo5)). we've been told that many of what we flag are \"legitimate criticisms\". Unfortunately the old tickets are auto deleted already so we cannot provide exact screenshots. While we did get some abusive reviews banned, the overall review bomb is still there and there are still over 100 clearly abusive ones remaining.\n\nHow can you ask the victim of mass harassment to read through thousands of reviews calling them insults and slurs, wishing death on their mother, and comparing them to Nazis/dictators, just to click a flag icon? It insanely lacks any empathy. For how much money Steam has and has made from us, can they really not have their support team go through the reviews in a few days? and this is also an obvious case of review bomb that should be flagged as offtopic as it does not pertain to gameplay but rather their objection to our moderation policy regarding not tolerating abuse towards game staff. not to mention the extreme levels of harassment that we would be forced to continuously undergo due to their inaction.\n\n**Current Ticket**\n\nBelow is the most recent ticket I sent to Steam also containing over 100 references and explanation of abusive reviews (including looking at the player's in game username in a few cases). I'm not expecting much from them at this point, but I'm posting my experience here. We had many Chinese players reach out to support us, both publicly and privately, during the worst of the harassment. The vast majority of them are just casual players who want to enjoy the game and have zero interest in this drama. A lot of the most helpful players who created tools, extensions, and guides are also among the Chinese playerbase.\n\nEven though there might be a cultural difference in how a vocal minority expects players to be treated, I absolutely do not want this to be used to push a negative stereotype against all Chinese gamers. This would have resulted in an inevitable data breach, and is something had forced the 'selfhosted' sub to change.\n\nThe (seemingly only active) moderator [replied neutrally, ](https://www.reddit.com/r/feedthebeast/comments/1t1fl44/comment/ojh9xee/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)stating that they did not know how this situation could be handled equitably. People provided solutions but nothing really seemed to happen, and the post lost traction.\n\n# The part where I get involved:\n\nI found a blatantly AI generated post about some mod which just threw DOOM items and another mod together.\n\nThe poster was weirdly defensive about AI use and argued that there wasn't any at all. Additionally, many were claiming their worlds were corrupted by this mod (you'll understand how this happened soon).\n\nInitially, I looked through the source code and found a literal plaintext JS file that was full of symbols you could not type on any standard keyboard, and that no IDE would give to you (stuff like emdashes). No developer sticks their pinky out to document near every self-explanatory line and type em-dashes everywhere in a closed-source mod.\n\nThere was also this dumb 'defense system' which was a bunch of... 'js pretending to be mixins?' to prevent players from being unkillable, using commands, etc.\n\nI posted about it and the person kept claiming they didn't use AI.\n\nI have literally no idea why, but I dug deeper. They had some weird 'java runtime agent' listed on their mod page, which they described as being optional. They, however, didn't mention the other 'agent', which was a self-extracting .JAR file which then **executed its contents** and essentially escaped the game's JVM.\n\nFrom here it would them extract a .DLL inside of that same .JAR, and[ execute arbitrary code on the user's computer. ](https://www.reddit.com/r/feedthebeast/comments/1t4dyvx/ok_we_really_need_to_do_something_about_ai_mods/)This code tried to actively erase memory from other mods that tried to touch things it blocked, and invariably lead to irreversible corruption. And did I mention they published another mod that did this exact thing.\n\nThis behaviour is **malware,** as it is done expressly to harm the user, in this case because they decided to install other mods. **After reporting this to Modrinth, both malicious mods were removed** from their platform after totalling over 600 downloads.\n\nThis isn't something that a regular dev would have written, nor would a script kiddie have been able to. AI uniquely created a situation where malicious code was propagated through a vibecoded project, which Google has reported more instances of recently.\n\n# The Response\n\nThis post got pretty popular. It even got the attention of Curseforge staff in the comments, surprisingly.\n\nAfter all this, me messaging the mod team, and some more boring stuff, they made A post about AI. They essentially said that 'this would be too hard to police, and AI has its uses anyways', which was NOT what the prevailing demands were for AI rules. They also introduced their point by calling people \"SJW\"s, which...\n\nThey got massively downvoted and decided to unpin this post.\n\nI can't find it in my comment history, and the screenshots are in subreddits I cannot share here, so you'll have to take my word for it unfortunately.\n\n# '1984'\n\na few people will know why I titled it this on a period so many weeks ago.\n\n[the subbreddit immediately broke down.](https://www.reddit.com/r/feedthebeast/comments/1t6xd8l/ai_generated_mods_should_be_banned_actually/?sort=top) With no rule to establish order, could you really expect anything else?\n\nThings happened which I can't talk about if I want to keep this post up, but there was a lot of arguing happening. It boiled down, but there was still a lot of division.\n\nThe  eventually culminated in a comment on an AI generated Create addon that expressed disappointment being removed by a moderator.\n\nThis caused an exodus of some the meme sub, mainly because the group against AI they had now viewed themselves as being no longer welcome on this sub.\n\nOn some level the amount of content being posted became more AI-oriented, and I personally worked on non-minecraft things because of the drama. What happened in the weeks between now and then I am not too sure of. Clearly it wasn't good.\n\n# 1984.\n\nToday, someone posted something called 'Disappointed about decision regarding AI'. It got deleted. It clearly had not violated any rules; Discussion posts are actively allowed- but it mattered not, it seems, for the post was deleted on nonexistent grounds.\n\nSomeone posted in jest, '1984'. That too was deleted. A lot of people really appreciate that Project Moon feels like it has an actual soul to it compared to the vast majority of companies. They also have a genuine vision for what it is they want to do, the story is really good, the characters are well written, and things are working very well clearly. It's beyond obvious Mr. KJH also clearly wants to stubbornly stick to his vision and he cares quite about the environment of his company even if people dislike his management style. Being entirely honest I agree with him almost entirely especially since it's ***clearly*** one of the strongest boons for Project Moon as a whole. I think you'll see that they're all relatively interconnected and touching on only one without simultaneously addressing the others would be a disservice to each.\n\n# 1. \"RECENT\" DRAMA\n\nNamely, the removal of one of our moderators. I'll do my best to answer some questions and add some context to everything that happened:\n\n**Q: What happened?**\n\nLast month, a[ post](https://www.reddit.com/r/okbuddyrosalyn/comments/1r25ukc/finally_now_that_callie_is_18_she_can_start/) was removed citing our prohibition on sexual content featuring the underage characters. Subsequent posts questioning the removal where then also removed by the same moderator, before being restored by other members of the mod team. Once a response was received from all parties involved, the decision was made to remove them from the mod team the very next day.\n\n**Q: Why were they removed as a moderator?**\n\nMyself, the other mods, and the community at large were dissatisfied by their response to said post's controversial removal.\n\nMy opinion on the matter is that the the original post's removal was secondary on the scale of deciding factors for removing them as moderator when compared to their decision to remove follow-up posts that were critical of the decision. Censoring discussion that is critical of moderator decisions, provided it doesn't cross the line into breaking rules itself, is an abuse of moderator authority and something that's been used countless times on other subs to enforce a moderator's biased/prejudicial/personal dogma.\n\n**Q: Why did it take so long to remove them as a mod?**\n\nIt didn't: removing a long-standing moderator is not something that *should* be done faster than it was. I don't receive up-to-the-minute notifications from this sub or any other and I don't expect live-service moderation from any of my fellow mods. r/okbuddyrosalyn gets about six posts on a good day. When we discovered there was a potential issue, we started a conversation about it between the mod team members. That process involved waiting for responses from mods that are not continuously online, some of which live in different time zones. Mistakes do happen and it would be unfair to remove any moderator with a long record of mainly making uncontested moderation decisions without giving them a fair chance to explain what happened. We typically don't spend very long evaluating posts and our best judgement at the time isn't always the correct one. That's where hearing one another's responses and communicating back and forth about it afterwards comes in, and that takes time.\n\nSomething that did not get announced publicly was that the moderator in question's moderation privileges were indefinitely disabled during our discussion until a resolution was reached. This wasn't shared because it was an on-the-fly decision and would have probably been seen by all of you, not unfairly, as an attempt to avoid an actual solution and let things die out rather than as part of a continuing process. Our mod team has decided this will be standard procedure for future inter-mod and community incidents. It's possible to check what permissions each moderator currently has on the mod list; u/Blockhog and I are the only mods that have permission to add or remove other mods below us in the list, as an example.\n\n**Q: Okay...why are you bringing all of this up now?**\n\nWell, there are a few reasons...\n\n# 2. REDDIT & ITS CURRENT STATE\n\nIn the time I've had an active account on Reddit, I've watched this platform continuously go downhill. It's gone through a villain's arc of enshittification from the \"cool, not entirely brain-dead alternative to Facebook and Twitter\" to \"dystopian, data-farming propaganda outlet\". It won't be groundbreaking news to any of you that have lingered around this site for awhile that things haven't been moving in a good direction.\n\n**Artificial Intelligence:** This is the big one that I felt *had* to be addressed. The number of bots in the last four years has exploded and our ability to identify them has all but dissipated. Numerous, obvious bot accounts were *active on this sub during the aforementioned moderator drama and* ***were continuously weighing in on the issue with opinionated comments relevant to the discussion***. Some were caught by the automod, some almost certainly weren't. It was mortifying to see AI used to drive and manipulate discussion about a moderation issue in a small, niche Calvin and Hobbes shitposting sub, likely without any input from the creators of said bots.\n\nThe amount of bot posts made on the main C&H sub both before and *after* it was shut down would probably stun most of you. It's an endless stream of by-the-hour robot posts doing everything from shilling Temu products and attempting to generate account karma all the way up to intentionally posting content that violates site-wide rules or copyright in the attempt to get the sub taken down alongside attempts to intentionally drive and manipulate discussion.\n\nMy goal when signing up to Reddit close to a decade ago was to join communities like this one, not to facilitate the creation of data profiles of myself to train LLMs so that my opinions could in turn be influenced by server farms. There was a time when Reddit's maintenance was funded in part by the purchase of gold awards and most accounts here were obviously real people and that time has well and truly passed. It should go without saying that freely giving your data away to a company under the now-flimsy pretext of interacting with real humans online is a pretty poor decision.\n\n**Censorship:** Removing posts and comments that are critical of moderator decisions, provided they don't break any rules themselves is, in my opinion, a morally offensive decision for a moderator to make. It's also something that happens regularly in just about every other subreddit, whether they focus on shitposting or international news. It's far worse when it occurs on a subreddit that purports to represent the views of an entire real-life community versus when it happens on a sub with an abstract, lighthearted theme like this one. The subjectivity and pervasiveness of censorship I've seen enforced by moderators (and admins, occasionally) on many of these \"official\" subs would border on criminality in a real-life setting. This is all to say \"you can't trust what you read on the internet\" and that discussions on this site are not necessarily representative of reality, but also that the transparency and fairness of arbitration on Reddit is markedly poor.\n\n**Visibility and Accountability:** Subreddit members do not have public access to mod logs or ban lists, so it very difficult for any of you to see or prove a recurring pattern of bad moderation. If the other mods and myself had chosen to remove every critical post during this recent drama and continuously ban members that posted or commented about it, it's very likely that your ability to organize and demand changes would have been reasonably impacted.\n\nRegular members are also unable to see every correct decision that gets made by mods. If we visibly mess up, everyone sees it; do the job right, you'll likely never know we did anything. This is not a request for recognition or a justification for wrong decisions, just an acknowledgement that a regular sub member doesn't necessarily get to see the full picture. Public access to mod logs might sound like an easy solution, but it would also infringe on our ability to moderate out content that genuinely shouldn't be viewed by anyone and has also been made more difficult to do with the changes to Reddit's API.\n\n**Administration:** Reddit and its admins have more frequently chosen to make heavy-handed decisions with little to no justification or recourse. The subreddit blackout was followed by entire mod teams getting removed and replaced. One of our own active mods, u/HeIsNotGhandi (who I've recently discovered is now a moderator of the Lemmy community), was permanently banned by an automatic system for a post they made. The same goes for u/imGhostKitty, who made the ubiquitous \"Menus and Parkour\" version of u/Super-Contribution's turntable meme. Both of those bans were followed by every single post and comment they ever made being automatically removed (I was able to restore most of the ones on this sub). These decisions have become much more common and oppressive since Reddit's IPO. If a post gets individually removed by Reddit, we mods can't even view it for ourselves in most cases: there's no means to evaluate or appeal if the decision was fair.\n\nI've found my username and flair are very fitting in regards to my position as a head mod, since the successful function and moderation of this sub relies on me being a benevolent dictator. Short of intervention by the admins, myself and every other head mod on this platform have free reign to run these subs like our own little kingdoms. We can ban people at will, we can remove posts without any reason, we can remove any other mod, and we can independently silence just about any discussion on those matters that we don't like. All subreddits would be better named \"\\[Head Mod's\\] Personal Domain of \\[Subreddit Name\\]\".\n\n**How awful...**\n\nNot *entirely*. Every system is only as good as the people in charge. The best and worst thing about Reddit is that one person can start and run a sub. I don't think r/okbuddyrosalyn would be greatly improved with a system of unrestricted direct democracy, especially on a site with anonymity, alt accounts, and bot accounts. Ultimately, your continued presence here represents your support or discontent with our moderation and I don't have the means to change that even if I wanted to. After two months straight of very public moderator meltdowns across multiple subs, however, I don't think it needs to be said that this system is far from ideal.\n\n# 3. THE FUTURE\n\nTo draw together everything covered here: the continued use of Reddit as a social media platform, both by all of you and myself, is something that should be approached with caution. What might look like repeated community-level issues are also stemming from foundational (and occasionally intentional) flaws.\n\nI don't particularly like coming to this website anymore except to occasionally check in on this sub and make sure things are still functioning somewhat normally and that reason has been eroding over time. It feels somewhat unethical to be fostering any sort of social community on a forum I no longer consider adequate for that purpose.\n\n**Would you nuke the sub and resign as head mod if you decide to leave?**\n\nNo. It shouldn't be my decision whether or not any of you stay here. I'm not important enough to unilaterally delete years of other people's creations and interactions. This rule has been met with varying success. The community tends to be very anti-AI, and especiaally anti vibe coding, so \"developers\" of vibe-coded apps and users often clash. On at least one occasion a high-visibility AI-produced app was completely taken down because of a massive security problem, and because of that incident and other similar ones users in the selfhosted space are very wary of AI. \n\n\nOne user called an app \"vibe-coded slop\" in a comment. The mods removed his comment alongside multiple others in the thread. The mods cited the subreddits Hate Speech rule as the reason for removing the post.
