No tools for editing documents, spreadsheets, or presentations. They keep logs on your account (you can see on Settings) of all your actions that can’t be deleted by you (unless you open a ticket). Sync clients are buggy: mobile app has issues (see their subreddit), and on Windows, if a synced drive disconnects temporarily, all files get thrown into the cloud trash.   \n  \nAlso, it seems to be run by basically one guy with two friends handling admin and marketing, running everything from servers to infrastructure (which, I think, are self-hosted).\n\n\n\n**Koofr**: They’ve been selling “lifetime 1TB” deals for years, which doesn’t inspire much confidence in long-term sustainability. End-to-end encryption only works in Vault mode (which feels like a RClone Crypt wrapper), but then you can’t use the document editor.   \n  \nSpeaking of the editor, it’s just Microsoft Office Online integration, which means any file you open gets sent to Microsoft’s servers for editing (so much for de-Googling). Uploads are slow, I rarely get more than 80–120 Mbps on a 1 Gbps line. And just for fun: their office in Slovenia is literally next door to the Slovene Intelligence and Security Agency (SOVA).\n\n\n\n**Tresorit**: Absurdly expensive and oddly limited. The 4 €/month plan (5 € if paid monthly) gives you only 50 GB, limits files to 2 GB each, and allows just two synced devices (why?). The 10 €/month plan raises the file limit to 10 GB. No editor, just basic storage. Not a practical choice.\n\n\n\n**Proton**: No Linux client, and while RClone support exists, it’s fragile, Proton has changed its API before, breaking compatibility. If you want to use it for NAS backups or Linux access, you’re basically relying on reverse-engineered work and hoping it doesn’t break. Also, 4 €/200 GB feels steep (for comparison, 200GB: Google = 2 €, BackBlaze S2 = 1.5 €, [Filen.io](http://Filen.io) = 2 €).\n\n\n\n**pCloud**: “Privacy-focused” until one day your account gets shut down for “copyrighted files,” as several Reddit users report, even for paid lifetime plans.\n\n\n\n**Drime**: A project from a few recent grads who basically [bought an Envato template](https://discuss.privacyguides.net/t/drime-cloud-falsely-advertises-zero-knowledge-encryption/33211/5) and launched it. Putting your data there feels riskier than staying with Google.\n\n\n\n**Shadow Drive**: “Sponsored” by OVH, the same folks who ran and later killed HubiC. Even their FAQ admits they don’t encrypt data at rest (everything’s stored in plain text) and they recommend you encrypt files yourself before uploading.\n\n\n\n**Internxt**: Do I even need to comment?\n\n\n\n**Hetzner**: Their Storage Box is slow, lacks encryption, and only protects data through local RAID (no replication). One fire like the OVH Strasbourg incident and your data’s gone. They don’t let you disable outdated protocols like FTP. With Storage Share (their shared Nextcloud instance), there’s no encryption either, everything’s stored plainly, and they even warn against enabling encryption since the key would sit on the same server, making it useless.\n\n\n\n**Mega**: Dubious ownership, questionable security practices — need I say more?\n\n\n\n**And so it goes on, endlessly. I’m honestly tired of looking.**\n\nSure, you could use any storage provider and encrypt files yourself before uploading, but that’s a massive hassle if you want smooth access from your phone (say, on iPhone) or in a browser. \n\nCryptomator works, but after it once corrupted a vault of mine years ago during a Vault update, I’ve been afraid to touch it. You can use their mobile app, but forget about browser access. If you go with RClone, you lose both browser and mobile integration, unless you rely on some random third-party S3Drive, whose dev you have to trust implicitly and hope they don’t push an update that exposes/rob your keys.\n\nAs for self-hosting, that means spending money, time, and constant maintenance, plus you take on your own risks (theft, fire, accidental damage, etc.). You’d need VPN access from outside (WireGuard or Tailscale), and locally, it’s easier for someone to compromise your data.\n\nAt some point, it feels like sticking with Google might actually be better for my mental health, convenience, and cost. Just encrypt the most sensitive stuff before uploading and move on.\n\nAnd believe me, I really REALLY want to ditch them. Will go to Nextcloud selfhosted eventually\n\nSearch --> Searxng locally hosted\n\nMobile --> iOS to GrapheneOS\n\nPassword Manager & 2FA --> KeepassDX/XC (I don't really see the point in having a separate 2FA app but if there is a strong case for it please LMK! I am following the principle of not having all your pickles in one jar)\n\nVPN --> Mullvad & Proton alternating.\n\nDNS --> Adguard DNS public server\n\nBrowser --> Librewolf on desktop, Vanadium on GOS (sucks there is no adblocker, but it is smoothest experience. IronFox slow AF for me)\n\nHost OS: Windows (lol) --> Ubuntu\n\nApps: Almost everything now on desktop and mobile is FOSS with some exceptions.\n\n**Overall Degoogle goal:** Prioritizing use of different services, self-hosting whenever possible, go FOSS whenever possible, but keeping the crucial closed-source, big tech apps when the alternatives don't exist or suck.\n\n**What I can't replace (ATM):**\n\nGoogle Maps. I tried all the alternatives. They suck. Constantly wrong business names, no reviews, no public transportation info = non-starter. I liked Organic the most but it was just a pain. Google Maps logged out it is for the time being\n\nUber: Evil company I know, but cheapest option in my country and the competitors are slower and way more expensive.\n\nAmazon: Even eviler, but I'm not shopping at 20 different stores, it's a huge waste of time, and my personal experience with Amazon has been they let me return whatever I want, whenever I want. I really do want to get rid of this one more than any other but, I'm not willing to sacrifice so much time and probably money to do so.\n\nWhatsApp: I'd have to cut off 90% of my social contacts, so this is also sadly a non-starter.\n\n**Next steps:**\n\nI am trying to self-host as much as possible when it is simple and convenient to do so. Looking to self-host calendar, some historical maps data for personal spots I can't log in Google Maps, and eventually images.\n\n**Overall impression**:\n\nThe process was time consuming but easier than I initially expected. I have also learned a ton about digital privacy, encryption, selfhosting via Docker so it's been very educational.
